Stainless steel bioreactors for biogas
A modular, scalable line covering every stage of anaerobic digestion development, from laboratory screening to pilot plant scale-up. From 2 to 1000 L, with reproducible biological and kinetic parameters throughout.
Built entirely from 316L stainless steel to withstand the corrosive environments of anaerobic digestion, including volatile fatty acids and hydrogen sulfide. Available as standalone units or parallel twin systems.

01
General and structural specifications
- Laboratory scale (R&D): 2, 5 and 10 L benchtop configurations, optimised for use inside fume hoods.
- Pilot scale: 20, 50 and 100 L standalone units on mobile wheeled skids.
- Industrial and semi-industrial scale: 200, 500 and 1000 L vertical vessels for macro-process optimisation.
- Wetted materials: 316L stainless steel, internally and externally electro-polished, surface roughness Ra ≤ 0.4 µm or custom-tailored. Supporting frames and control enclosures in 304 stainless steel.
02
Vessel architecture and agitation
- Geometry: height-to-diameter ratio tailored for the anaerobic digestion of liquid biomass, sludges and high-solid-content substrates.
- Mechanical agitation: top-mounted variable-speed drive, with mechanical seals or hermetic magnetic couplings.
- Interchangeable impellers: pitched blade, Rushton turbines or anchor/scraper impellers, to homogenise viscous sludge and prevent surface crust.
- Thermoregulation: insulated heating jacket around the vessel body, across the whole biological range: psychrophilic (< 20 °C), mesophilic (35 – 40 °C) and thermophilic (50 – 55 °C).
03
Control modules and gas management
- BIOBOX unit (process control): continuous monitoring and automated regulation of pH, oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), temperature and foam, with automated acid/base dosing pumps for digestate stabilisation.
- GASBOX unit (gas analysis and flow): real-time measurement of the biogas produced, using high-precision mass flow meters or volumetric drum-type gas meters for micro-flows.
- Dedicated ports for gas analysers, to measure biomethane quality online: CH₄, CO₂, H₂S and O₂.
- The modular control philosophy of the benchtop systems, extended to industrial capacities.
04
Safety, containment and certifications
- Fume hood integration (up to 10 L): designed for installation inside certified ventilated safety enclosures, e.g. to EN 14175, protecting laboratory personnel from toxic gas exposure.
- ATEX certification: electrical parts, sensors, motors and valves certified ATEX (Zone 1 or Zone 2), a strict safety mandate for flammable gases such as methane and hydrogen.
- PED compliance: pilot and industrial vessels are engineered, tested and stamped to the Pressure Equipment Directive for above-atmospheric pressure operation.
