Vertical column photobioreactors
A line of vertical column photobioreactors for microalgae and cyanobacteria cultivation, from laboratory screening to pilot and industrial production. From 50 to 1000 L.
A hybrid design: a high-transmittance acrylic cylindrical body, to maximise light penetration and photosynthetically active radiation, on a 316L stainless steel flanged base. Modular architecture sealed with O-rings: it comes fully apart for cleaning and maintenance.
Dimensions and footprint
Dimensions in millimetres unless stated otherwise. Every size keeps the fluid dynamic proportions of the 300 L baseline.

Construction and auxiliaries
Stainless steel base
- Material: AISI 316L stainless steel for all fluid-wetted metallic components.
- Finish: mirror-polished interior with Ra < 0.8 µm roughness, to reduce cell adhesion and scaling and to ease clean-in-place.
- Sealing: custom-machined groove housing a high-performance O-ring, engineered for stress-free tube decoupling during maintenance.
- Drain: centrally located 1" (DN25) ball valve on the dished flange, for 100% system drainage.
Optical column and reactor head
- Cylinder: optical-grade PMMA acrylic tube with enhanced UV resistance, compatible with industrial surface disinfectants.
- Lid: removable heavy-gauge acrylic top plate with a flanged central inspection and accessory window.
- Modular architecture sealed with dedicated O-rings: quick, complete disassembly for cleaning, autoclaving and maintenance, removing biofouling risk.
Ports and process interface
- Bottom drain: 1" ball valve across the whole range.
- Inoculation port (optional): 1" sanitary quick-connect on the stainless base, for aseptic inoculation of the starter culture.
- Quick fill port (optional): 2" sanitary tri-clamp or flanged intake on the lid, for fast media, water and nutrient replenishment.
Modular auxiliaries (optional)
- Gas injection sparger: bottom fine-bubble diffuser for air and CO₂, engineered to induce a stable airlift loop: pneumatic mixing, with no shear stress on fragile algal cell walls.
- Gas exhaust relief valve: automated or manual, evacuates the oxygen produced by photosynthesis and stabilises inner pressure during intensive sparging.
- Load cell kit: high-accuracy cells beneath the leg anchor plates, for continuous gravimetric mass and volume recording.
- External LED lighting: wrap-around or semi-cylindrical arrays with targeted PAR spectrum, customisable red/blue ratio and digital dimming modules.
